I spent four months in the USA with a work-permit arranged through Work and Travel USA. This was a good opportunity to see more of the US than is possible in an ordinary holiday. The organisation was helpful as were their travel arm, Council Travel.
I worked for only four weeks in the US at the Beau Rivage Motel in Old Orchard Beach, Maine. I found out I'm not well suited to cleaning rooms day in, day out. Still it was a nice hotel with friendly staff.
After that I travelled around for 8 weeks, met my parents and travelled with them for 3 weeks, then headed to Baltimore for the Farpoint 98 sci-fi convention and the chance to meet other fans in person.
I've made some notes on different towns I visited; quick links to individual towns are below:
Some thoughts I have about the US from my trip.
....was a shock. I keep using Dollars instead of Pounds and wait for sales assistants to add on tax that is already included. But I could still drive just as well as I did when I left, with just as bad a sense of direction. Still I got back in the swing of things within a couple of week.
